Different Ways of Taking Food (Modes of Feeding)
- Different animals take food in different ways depending on the type of food they eat.
- Bees and humming-birds use siphoning to suck nectar from flowers.
- Infants of humans and many animals feed by sucking mother's milk.
Human Digestive System – Parts and Functions
- The alimentary canal is a continuous tube from mouth to anus where food is digested.
- The digestive system = alimentary canal + associated digestive glands.
- The parts of the alimentary canal in order are: Buccal cavity → Oesophagus (food pipe) → Stomach → Small intestine → Large intestine → Rectum → Anus.
Digestion in the Mouth (Buccal Cavity)
- The buccal cavity contains teeth, tongue, and salivary glands.
- Teeth mechanically break food into small pieces – this is physical/mechanical digestion.
- There are four types of teeth: Incisors (cutting and biting), Canines (piercing and tearing), Premolars (chewing and grinding), Molars (chewing and grinding).
Digestion in the Stomach
- The stomach is a thick-walled, J-shaped bag and is the widest part of the alimentary canal.
- The inner lining of the stomach secretes three things: mucous, hydrochloric acid (HCl), and digestive juices.
- Mucous protects the stomach lining from being damaged by its own acid.
