Digestion in the Mouth (Buccal Cavity)

  • The buccal cavity contains teeth, tongue, and salivary glands.
  • Teeth mechanically break food into small pieces – this is physical/mechanical digestion.
  • There are four types of teeth: Incisors (cutting and biting), Canines (piercing and tearing), Premolars (chewing and grinding), Molars (chewing and grinding).

Digestion in the Stomach

  • The stomach is a thick-walled, J-shaped bag and is the widest part of the alimentary canal.
  • The inner lining of the stomach secretes three things: mucous, hydrochloric acid (HCl), and digestive juices.
  • Mucous protects the stomach lining from being damaged by its own acid.
