2. Ayurveda

  • Ayurveda originated in prehistoric times and developed significantly during the Vedic period.
  • It is one of the oldest systems of medicine.
  • Ayurveda recognises seven basic tissues: plasma, blood, muscles, fat, bone, marrow and semen.

  • Unani medicine is a Perso-Arabic system of traditional medicine.
  • It was widely practised during the Mughal period and is still practised in many parts of South India.
  • It is based on the teachings of Greek physicians Hippocrates and Galen.

4. Siddha Medicine

  • Siddha medicine originated in Tamil Nadu, South India.
  • The Central Council of Indian Medicine was established in 1971 and regulates education in Siddha medicine.
  • There are 22 principal Siddhars, with Agasthya regarded as the father of Siddha medicine.
