Meaning of Market
- In economics, a market means the whole region in which buyers and sellers of a commodity are in free contact with one another and the price of the same good tends to equality quickly.
- A market does not depend on a fixed place. Contact may happen through letters, telephone, telegrams, e-mail, Internet, or middlemen.
- A market has four essentials: area or region, commodity, buyers and sellers, and competition.
Forms of Market Structure
- The main market forms are perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, oligopoly, and monopsony.
- Perfect competition has many buyers and sellers, homogeneous products, and price-taking firms.
- Monopoly has a single seller, no close substitutes, entry barriers, and price-making power.
Perfect Competition and Pure Competition
- A firm under perfect competition is a price-taker, not a price-maker.
- Under perfect competition, the industry is the price-maker while the firm is the price-taker.
- Perfect competition is a wider concept than pure competition.
Monopoly
- Monopoly has a single seller.
- There are no close substitutes for the monopolist's product.
- The monopolist is both the firm and the industry.
