Meaning and Definitions of Personality
- Personality refers to the sum total of distinctive and unique characteristics governing an individual's thought process and behavioural approach to adapt to the environment.
- The word 'personality' comes from the Latin word 'persona' meaning mask.
- G.W. Allport defined personality as 'the dynamic organisation within the individual of those psycho-physical systems that determine his unique adjustment to his environment.'
Type Theories of Personality
- Type theories classify personality into distinct categories based on either physical or mental structure.
- Hippocrates (460 BC–370 BC) proposed the Four Temperaments theory based on four body fluids (Humors): Blood (Sanguine), Yellow Bile (Choleric), Black Bile (Melancholic), Phlegm (Phlegmatic).
- Sanguine: Sociable, optimistic, talkative, leader-like. Choleric: Egocentric, irritable, aggressive, impulsive. Melancholic: Serious, analytical, quiet, introvert. Phlegmatic: Peaceful, relaxed, thoug
Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory of Personality
- Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) developed psychoanalytic theory, initially treating hysteria patients using hypnosis.
- Four central ideas: (1) Levels of Consciousness, (2) Structure of Personality, (3) Defense Mechanisms, (4) Psychosexual Stages.
- Three levels of mind (Iceberg Analogy): Conscious (tip — current thoughts), Preconscious (just below surface — retrievable memories), Unconscious (submerged portion — repressed desires, impulses).
Neo-Freudian (Post-Freudian) Theories of Personality
- Neo-Freudians accepted the psychoanalytic framework but modified it, emphasising social and cultural factors over biological instincts.
- Karen Horney (1885–1952): Opposed Freud's 'penis envy' — stated that women feel inferior due to social treatment, not anatomy. Introduced 'womb envy' concept (men envy women's ability to give life).
- Horney proposed that psychological disorders develop due to disturbances in interpersonal relationships during childhood, creating Basic Anxiety and Basic Hostility.
