7.1 Attitude—Meaning, Concept and Definition
- Attitude is a mental or neural state of readiness developed through experience that influences how individuals respond to different objects, people, or situations
- Attitudes are lasting evaluations expressed through likes and dislikes toward attitude objects
- Attitudes can be positive (inclination toward something) or negative (avoidance or aggression toward something)
7.1.1 Main Components of Attitude (A-B-C Model)
- Affective Component: The emotional or feeling dimension of attitude—pleasant or unpleasant emotions toward the attitude object; acts as triggering factor for behavior intensity
- Cognitive Component: The thoughts and beliefs about the attitude object; positive beliefs lead to positive attitudes while unfavorable beliefs lead to negative attitudes
- Behavioral Component: The actual expression or action resulting from attitude; favorable behavior shows inclination, unfavorable behavior shows avoidance or aggression
7.1.2 Perception and Attitude
- Perception is the process of understanding and comprehending the external world
- Perception forms the foundation of attitudes—how we perceive situations determines our attitudes
- Positive perception of surroundings (friendly, stress-free) leads to positive attitudes toward social world
7.1.3 Belief and Attitude
- Belief is a conviction or assumption held as true, with or without empirical proof
- Belief is the cognitive part of attitude—it's what we think is true
- Belief is more general than attitude; not all beliefs become attitudes
