What is Matter?

Three Forms of Matter

  • Solids have a fixed shape and size. They do not flow.
  • Liquids can flow and take the shape of their container.
  • Gases do not have a fixed shape or size. They spread out to fill the space.

Changing States of Matter

  • Matter can change from one form to another by heating or cooling.
  • Heating turns solid into liquid (melting), and liquid into gas (evaporation).
  • Cooling turns gas into liquid (condensation), and liquid into solid (freezing).

  • We use solids, liquids, and gases every day.
  • Solids: used to make furniture, toys, books, and buildings.
  • Liquids: used for drinking, cooking, and cleaning.
