1. Change of State of Water

  • Water can change from one form to another: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapour).
  • Evaporation happens when water turns into vapour due to heat from the Sun.
  • Condensation happens when water vapour turns back into water due to cooling.

2. The Water Cycle

  • The water cycle is the continuous movement of water between the Earth and the atmosphere.
  • Steps: Evaporation → Condensation → Cloud formation → Rain or snow → Collection in rivers, lakes, oceans.
  • The Sun is the main driver of the water cycle.

3. Impurities in Water

  • Water from rivers, lakes, and ponds has impurities and is not safe to drink directly.
  • Impurities can be soluble (dissolve in water) or insoluble (do not dissolve).
  • Soluble impurities include salts of sodium, calcium, magnesium, and iron.

4. Purification of Water

  • Water must be purified before drinking to remove dirt and kill germs.
  • Common methods: Boiling, Chlorination, and Water Purifiers.
  • Boiling kills germs by heating water for 5–10 minutes.
