There are seven letters used in Roman numerals: I, V, X, L, C, D, and M. Each letter stands for a number. For Class 4, we focus on I (1), V (5), X (10
If a symbol is repeated
If a symbol is repeated, we add its value. For example, II means 1 + 1 = 2. But no symbol can be repeated more than three times in a row.
When a smaller symbol is written
When a smaller symbol is written to the right of a bigger symbol, we add their values. For example, VI = 5 + 1 = 6.
When a smaller symbol is written
When a smaller symbol is written to the left of a bigger symbol, we subtract the smaller from the bigger. For example, IV = 5 - 1 = 4.
