What to Focus On
- Roman numerals use letters to represent numbers.
- There are 7 basic symbols: I, V, X, L, C, D, M.
- There is no symbol for zero.
- Repeating a symbol adds its value (e.g., III = 3).
- Only I, X, C, M can be repeated.
- A symbol cannot be repeated more than 3 times.
- Numbers 1 to 3 are written by repeating I.
- 4 is written as IV (5 – 1), not IIII.
- 9 is written as IX (10 – 1).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Any letter can be repeated three times to make bigger numbers.
IV means 1 + 5 = 6.
We can write 4 as IIII instead of IV.
Memory Tips
The 7 Roman numeral letters and their values: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000
I, X, C, M can be repeated up to 3 times; V, L, D never repeated
IV = 4 (5 - 1), IX = 9 (10 - 1), XL = 40 (50 - 10)
