Rules for Reading and Writing Roman Numerals
Rule 1
Repeating a symbol adds its value. For example, II = 2, XXX = 30.
A symbol can be repeated only up to three times. So III = 3, but 4 is not IIII.
Roman Numerals from 1 to 50
Special cases
4 = IV, 9 = IX, 40 = XL, 49 = XLIX.
Numbers like 14 = 10 + 4 = X + IV = XIV.
Repeating a symbol adds its value (e.g., III = 3).
Key relations
For example, II means 1 + 1 = 2.
For example, VI = 5 + 1 = 6.
For example, IV = 5 - 1 = 4.
