What is friction?
Answer
Friction is a force that acts between two surfaces when they rub against each other. It always tries to slow down or stop moving objects.
Why does a rolling ball stop after some time?
Answer
A rolling ball stops because of friction between the ball and the ground. This force acts in the opposite direction and slows the ball down until it stops.
Why is it hard to walk on ice?
Answer
Ice is very smooth, so there is very little friction between our feet and the ice. Without enough friction, we slip and cannot walk properly.
How does friction help us write with a pencil?
Answer
Friction between the pencil tip and paper allows the graphite to leave a mark. Without friction, the pencil would just slide without writing.
Why do car tyres have grooves?
Answer
The grooves increase friction between the tyres and the road. This helps the car grip the road and prevents slipping, especially in rain.
Why do we fall when we step on a banana peel?
Answer
A banana peel is smooth and slippery. It reduces friction between our foot and the ground, so our foot slides forward and we lose balance.
Why do machines get heated after running for some time?
Answer
Due to friction between moving parts, heat is produced. This causes the machine to become hot after working for a while.
How does friction help us hold a glass of water?
