Card 1Digestive System

What is digestion?

Answer

Digestion is the process of breaking down food into small parts so our body can absorb nutrients and get energy.

Card 2Mouth and Teeth

Why is chewing important?

Answer

Chewing breaks food into small pieces and mixes it with saliva. This makes it easier to swallow and helps digestion start in the mouth.

Card 3Mouth and Teeth

What role does saliva play in digestion?

Answer

Saliva softens food and turns it into a soft ball. It also has chemicals that start breaking down food, especially starch.

Card 4Swallowing Process

How does food move from the mouth to the stomach?

Answer

The tongue pushes food to the back of the throat. Then, muscles in the food pipe (oesophagus) push it down to the stomach in a wave-like motion.

Card 5Stomach Function

What happens to food in the stomach?

Answer

Food stays in the stomach for about 4 hours. Digestive juices and enzymes break it into a semi-liquid form so it can move to the small intestine.

Card 6Small Intestine

Which organ absorbs nutrients from food?

Answer

The small intestine absorbs nutrients from digested food. The walls pass the nutrients into the blood to be used by the body.

Card 7Liver and Pancreas

How do the liver and pancreas help in digestion?

Answer

The liver makes bile to break down fats. The pancreas makes digestive juices that help break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

Card 8Large Intestine

What is the function of the large intestine?

Answer

The large intestine absorbs water from undigested food and forms solid waste (faeces) that is removed from the body.
