Sources of Light

  • Light is a form of energy that helps us see objects.
  • Things that give out light are called sources of light.
  • Sources of light can be natural or artificial.

Luminous and Non-Luminous Objects

  • Luminous objects give out their own light (e.g., Sun, candle).
  • Non-luminous objects do not give out light (e.g., table, book, Moon).
  • We see non-luminous objects when light reflects off them into our eyes.

Properties of Light

  • Light travels in straight lines — this is called rectilinear propagation.
  • Light spreads in all directions from its source.
  • Light can be reflected, refracted, and split into colors.

Transparent, Translucent, and Opaque Objects

  • Transparent objects allow all light to pass through (e.g., glass, air).
  • Translucent objects allow some light to pass through (e.g., tracing paper, frosted glass).
  • Opaque objects do not allow any light to pass through (e.g., wood, metal).
