Parts of a Plant

  • All plants have two main parts: the root (below soil) and the shoot (above soil).
  • Roots anchor the plant in the soil and absorb water and minerals.
  • Shoot includes stem, leaves, flowers, and fruits.

  • Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food.
  • It happens in the leaves using sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide.
  • Chlorophyll (green pigment in leaves) traps sunlight.

Transpiration

  • Transpiration is the process of water loss from leaves in the form of water vapour.
  • It happens through tiny pores called stomata on the underside of leaves.
  • Transpiration helps cool the plant, just like sweating cools our body.
