  • A substance that dissolves in a liquid is called soluble.
  • Sugar, salt, and juice powder dissolve in water — they are soluble.

Solute, Solvent, and Solution

  • A solution is formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent.
  • The substance that dissolves is called the solute (e.g., sugar).

Separation of Soluble Substances

  • Evaporation is used to separate a dissolved solid from a liquid.
  • When saltwater is heated, water turns into vapour and salt is left behind.
  • This method is used to get salt from seawater in hot countries.

Separation of Insoluble Substances

  • Sedimentation: Heavy particles settle down when water is left undisturbed.
  • Decantation: Pouring clean water carefully after sedimentation.
  • Filtration: Passing mixture through a filter to separate solids from liquid.
