What is a Map?

  • A map is a drawing of the Earth's surface on a flat piece of paper.
  • It shows places like countries, cities, rivers, mountains, and roads.
  • Maps are smaller than the real area and are made using a scale.

Types of Maps

  • There are three main types of maps: Physical, Political, and Thematic.
  • Physical maps show natural features like mountains, rivers, and plains.
  • Political maps show boundaries of countries, states, and cities.

Elements of a Map

  • All maps have five important elements: Title, Scale, Direction (North Line), Symbols, and Key/Legend.
  • The scale tells how much the real distance is reduced on the map.
  • The north line (with 'N') shows the direction of North.

Directions and Colors on Maps

  • The four main directions are North, South, East, and West — called cardinal directions.
  • The arrow with 'N' on a map shows North.
  • Intermediate directions are Northeast, Southeast, Southwest, and Northwest.
