Types of Fractions

  • A fraction has two parts: numerator (top) and denominator (bottom).
  • Like fractions have the same denominator (e.g., 2/5, 3/5).
  • Unlike fractions have different denominators (e.g., 2/3, 4/7).

Converting Fractions

  • To convert improper fraction to mixed number: divide numerator by denominator.
  • Quotient = whole number, remainder = new numerator, denominator stays same.
  • To convert mixed number to improper fraction: multiply whole number by denominator and add numerator.

  • Like denominators: bigger numerator = bigger fraction.
  • Like numerators: smaller denominator = bigger fraction.
  • Unlike both: find LCM of denominators and convert to like fractions.

  • Addition/Subtraction: Convert to like fractions using LCM, then add/subtract numerators.
  • Multiplication: Multiply numerators and denominators separately.
  • Division: Multiply by reciprocal of the divisor.
