  • There are 7 basic Roman numerals: I, V, X, L, C, D, and M.
  • Each letter stands for a specific number: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.
  • These letters are combined in different ways to form other numbers.

Rules for Writing Roman Numerals

  • Letters I, X, C, and M can be repeated up to 3 times only. For example: III = 3, XXX = 30, CCC = 300.
  • Letters V, L, and D are never repeated.
  • When a smaller numeral is on the right of a larger one, we add them. Example: VI = 5 + 1 = 6.

  • To convert Indo-Arabic numbers to Roman numerals, break the number into parts (like 900 + 20 + 4).
  • Convert each part separately and then join them.
  • To convert Roman numerals to Indo-Arabic, break the numeral into parts and add or subtract as needed.
