Key Topics to Revise

1

Parts of a Flower

  • A flower has four main parts: sepals, petals, stamen, and pistil.
  • Sepals are green, leaf-like structures that protect the flower in the bud stage.
  • Petals are colorful and attract insects. They also protect the inner parts.
2

Unisexual and Bisexual Flowers

  • Bisexual flowers have both stamen and pistil in the same flower (e.g., rose, hibiscus).
  • Unisexual flowers have either stamen (male flower) or pistil (female flower), not both.
  • Examples of plants with unisexual flowers: papaya, watermelon, cucumber, corn.
3

Pollination: Types and Agents

  • Pollination is the transfer of pollen grains from anther to stigma.
  • Two types: self-pollination and cross-pollination.
  • Self-pollination: Pollen moves to stigma of the same flower or another flower on the same plant.
4

Agents of Pollination

  • Insect-pollinated flowers: Bright colors, sweet smell, nectar, sticky pollen, anthers and stigma inside the flower.
  • Wind-pollinated flowers: No bright colors or smell, produce lots of light pollen, have feathery stigmas, anthers hang outside.
  • Water-pollinated flowers: Found in aquatic plants like Vallisneria and Hydrilla; pollen floats on water.
