States of Matter

  • Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
  • There are three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.
  • Solids have fixed shape and volume. Example: book, chair.

Molecular Arrangement in States

  • Solids: Molecules are tightly packed and arranged in order. They cannot move freely.
  • Liquores: Molecules are loosely packed and can move around each other.
  • Gases: Molecules are far apart and move quickly in all directions.

Changes in States of Matter

  • Melting: Solid changes to liquid on heating. Example: Ice → Water.
  • Freezing: Liquid changes to solid on cooling. Example: Water → Ice.
  • Evaporation: Liquid changes to gas on heating. Example: Water → Steam.

  • A solution is formed when a solute dissolves in a solvent. Example: Salt (solute) in Water (solvent).
  • Types of solutions: Solid in liquid (sugar-water), Liquid in liquid (lemon-water), Gas in liquid (soda).
  • Insoluble solids (like sand) can be separated by sedimentation, decantation, or filtration.
