Origin and Sources of the Vedic Civilisation

  • The Aryans are believed to have come from Central Asia around 1500 BCE.
  • They first settled in the Sapta Sindhu region (land of seven rivers: Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, and Saraswati).
  • The region was called Brahmavarta (land of gods) in the Early Vedic Period and later Aryavarta (land of Aryans) in the Later Vedic Period.
2

Political Organisation

  • In the Early Vedic Period, the king (Rajan) was elected based on bravery and wisdom.
  • He was helped by the Senani (army chief) and Purohit (priest).
  • Two important assemblies: Sabha (council of elders) and Samiti (general assembly of people).
3

Social Life and Varna System

  • Society was patriarchal; the eldest male was the head of the family (Grihapati).
  • In the Early Vedic Period, women were respected, educated, and could participate in debates. Examples: Gargi, Maitreyi.
  • In the Later Vedic Period, women's status declined. They were denied education and remarriage was discouraged.
4

Religion and Economy

  • Early Vedic religion was nature worship. Gods like Indra (rain), Agni (fire), Varun (water), Surya (sun) were important.
  • No temples or idols; worship was through yajnas (fire sacrifices) with hymns and offerings.
  • In the Later Vedic Period, religion became complex. New gods like Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva emerged.
