1. Meaning and Cause of Allergy
- The concept of allergy was introduced in 1906 by Clemens Von Pirquet.
- Allergy in Greek means 'other work'.
- Allergic diseases are caused by hypersensitivity of the immune system to something in the environment that usually does not harm most people.
2. Entry Routes and Common Allergens
- Allergens can enter the body through the skin, mouth, or nose.
- Skin contact allergens include substances such as latex, certain clothes, and insect bites.
- Mouth entry is common with food allergens.
3. Symptoms and Common Allergic Reactions
- Allergic reactions may affect the nose, eyes, skin, lungs, digestive system, and blood circulation.
- Inhaled allergens can cause irritation of the nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing, red and watery eyes, mucus in the lungs, and shortness of breath.
- Food allergy can cause abdominal pain, bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea, itchy skin, and swelling of the skin.
4. Diagnosis of Allergy
- Allergy testing helps confirm or rule out allergies.
- Two equally valid methods are used for diagnosis: skin prick test and allergy blood test.
- Skin prick test is also called puncture testing or prick testing.
