Meaning and Need of Classification

  • Classification is the system of arranging living organisms into groups based on similarities and differences.
  • It helps in studying a very large number of plants and animals in a simpler way.
  • It makes the study systematic and shows relationships between organisms.

Five Kingdom Classification

  • Originally the living world was classified into two kingdoms: Plantae and Animalia.
  • This classification had anomalies, so a better system was needed.
  • Robert Whittaker in 1969 proposed the five kingdom classification.

Kingdom Monera and Bacteria

  • Bacteria are microscopic, unicellular organisms.
