Card 1Simple Sentence

What is a simple sentence?

Answer

A simple sentence is a sentence which has only one finite verb in it. It may be a short sentence or a long sentence, but it has only one finite verb.

Card 2Simple Sentence

Why is a long sentence not always a compound or complex sentence?

Answer

A long sentence can still be simple if it has only one finite verb. Non-finite verbs do not count as finite verbs, so length alone does not decide the sentence type.

Card 3Simple Sentence

What is the finite verb in: An old man sat under a tree?

Answer

The finite verb is sat. Since there is only one finite verb, the sentence is a simple sentence.

Card 4Verb Forms

What is meant by a finite verb?

Answer

A finite verb is the main verb that shows tense and helps form the sentence. In a clause, it is the verb used to decide how many clauses the sentence has.

Card 5Simple Sentence

This is a simple sentence because it has only one finite verb, sat. It has a double subject, but that does not make it compound.

Card 6Simple Sentence

Card 7Verb Forms

What are non-finite verbs in the sentence: An old man, wearing very old-fashioned glasses and dusty clothes, sat under a tree, not noticing the men, women and children passing along the road or the bo

Answer

The non-finite verbs are wearing, noticing, passing and sailing. They do not count as finite verbs, so the sentence is still simple.

Card 8Compound Sentence

What is a compound sentence?

Answer

A compound sentence is a sentence made up of two or more principal or main clauses. These clauses are also called coordinate clauses and are joined by a coordinating conjunction.
