- The term Antarctica was coined by Marinus of Tyre in the 2nd Century AD.
- In the 15th and 16th centuries, journeys around the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn proved that Terra Australis Incognita existed as a continent.
- James Cook crossed latitude 67°15' along the Antarctic Circle in 1773. He discovered nearby islands but did not see Antarctica itself.
Antarctica as a Continent
- Antarctica is the world’s southernmost continent and contains the geographic South Pole.
- Its area is approximately 14,200,000 sq km.
- It is the fifth largest continent in area after Asia, Africa, North America and South America.

- Antarctica is surrounded by seas of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
- The Weddell Sea and Ross Sea deeply penetrate the continent from opposite directions.
- These seas divide Antarctica into Eastern Antarctica and Western Antarctica.

- Antarctica has the severest climate among all continents.
- It experiences extreme cold, frost, snowstorms and strong winds.
- Interior temperatures are -28°C in summer in January and -50°C in winter in July.
