Formulas

1. Heat and Temperature

Heat is a form of energy which flows from a hot body to a cold body when they are kept in contact.

Temperature is a quantity which tells us the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.

SI unit of heat = joule (J)

SI unit of temperature = Kelvin (K)

2. Units and Conversion of Heat and Temperature

1 kcal = 1000 cal

1 cal = 4.2 J (nearly)

1 J = 0.24 cal

t°C = (273 + t) K

°F = (9/5) °C + 32

3. Effects of Heat

Increase in size due to heating = thermal expansion

Effects of heat = change in temperature, change in size or shape, change in state

4. Thermal Expansion in Solids, Liquids and Gases

Liquids and gases have only cubical expansion

Liquids expand much more than solids when heated

Gases expand much more than liquids and solids
