1. Heat, Temperature, and Units

  • Heat is a form of energy which flows from a hot body to a cold body when they are kept in contact.
  • Temperature is a quantity which tells us the degree of hotness or coldness of a body.
  • Heat and temperature are different ideas. Heat is energy transfer, while temperature tells how hot or cold something is.

2. Thermometer and Temperature Scales

  • A mercury thermometer is a common laboratory thermometer.
  • It consists of a glass capillary tube with a mercury-filled bulb.
  • The stem has markings from -10°C to 110°C with 120 equal divisions.

3. Effects of Heat

  • Heat has three main effects: change in temperature, change in size or shape, and change in state.
  • When a body is heated, its temperature rises; when cooled, its temperature falls.
  • The change in temperature depends on the quantity of heat, the material of the body, and the mass of the body.

4. Change of State and Latent Heat

  • Change of state happens at a constant temperature.
  • Melting or fusion is the change from solid to liquid at a fixed temperature.
  • Freezing is the change from liquid to solid at a fixed temperature.
