Reflection of Light

  • "The returning of light in the same medium after striking a surface, is called reflection of light."
  • Light is reflected when it strikes a surface and returns in the same medium.
  • A shiny surface such as a plane mirror reflects light strongly.

Laws of Reflection and Ray Terms

  • The incident ray strikes the surface.
  • The reflected ray is the ray that goes back into the same medium.
  • The normal is the perpendicular drawn at the point of incidence.

Plane Mirror and Image Formation

  • A plane mirror is made by silvering one side of a thin plane glass plate.
  • The silvered surface is opaque.
  • The reflecting surface faces the incident light.

Lateral Inversion and Mirror Uses

  • In a plane mirror, right and left are interchanged.
  • "Thus, the interchange of left and right sides in the object and image formed by the plane mirror is called lateral inversion."
  • The image is erect but laterally inverted.
