  • Measurement is comparison of an unknown quantity with a fixed known quantity of the same kind called the unit.
  • Magnitude of a quantity is written as number of times the unit is contained in the quantity × unit.
  • Length is the distance between two points. Its S.I. unit is metre (m). It is measured with a metre ruler or measuring tape.

2. Volume and Its Measurement

  • The space occupied by an object is called its volume.
  • The S.I. unit of volume is cubic metre (m³).
  • A smaller unit of volume is cubic centimetre (cm³).

3. Area of Regular and Irregular Objects

  • Area is the surface occupied by an object.
  • The S.I. unit of area is square metre (m²).
  • Bigger units of area are are, hectare, and square kilometre.

  • Density helps distinguish between substances.
  • Equal masses of different substances have different volumes.
  • Equal volumes of different substances have different masses.
