  • The too...to form changes into the so/such...that form.
  • The so/such...that sentence is a complex sentence.
  • The tense in the subordinate clause of a so/such...that sentence depends upon the tense in the main clause.

2. Affirmative and Negative Sentences

  • Affirmative sentences can be changed into negative sentences without changing meaning.
  • Negative forms can be made by using a word of opposite meaning after a negative word, by using double negatives, by using a negative-interrogative form, or by changing only to none but.
  • Only in an affirmative sentence changes to none but in negative form.

3. Interrogative and Assertive Sentences

  • Only interrogative sentences used for emphasis can be changed into assertive form.
  • An affirmative question implies a negative statement.
  • A negative question implies an affirmative statement.

4. Exclamatory and Assertive Sentences

  • Exclamatory sentences express strong emotion.
  • They often begin with how, what, O, O that, would that, if only, alas, etc.
  • When converting exclamatory to assertive, use normal word order and add words suggestive of the original emotion.
