Main Marks of Punctuation

  • The main marks of punctuation are full stop, mark of interrogation, mark of exclamation, comma, semicolon, colon, apostrophe, quotation marks or inverted commas, dash, and hyphen.
  • Each mark has a special use, and correct use makes writing clear and meaningful.
  • The apostrophe is a punctuation mark, not a question mark.

  • A full stop is used to close a statement or a command.
  • A full stop is used after abbreviations for titles, names, degrees, and similar forms.
  • It is now common to drop full stops in abbreviations like Mr. and Dr., and both UNO and U.N.O. are acceptable.

Question Mark and Exclamation Mark

  • The mark of interrogation is placed at the end of a question.
  • The mark of exclamation is placed at the end of an exclamatory sentence expressing sudden or strong emotion.
  • Questions ask something, while exclamations show feeling such as surprise, admiration, joy, or sadness.

  • The comma is the shortest pause and should be used wherever a pause is needed.
  • The comma is used to separate words in series, phrases in series, and clauses in series.
  • The comma is used to set off a noun of address.
