1. What an Adverb Does
- An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
- Examples: read carefully, a very careful reader, read very carefully.
- An adverb may show manner, time, place, frequency, degree, or certainty.
2. Formation and Forms of Adverbs
- Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives: quickly, gladly, warmly, lazily, happily, merrily.
- Some words have the same form as both adjective and adverb: early, late, hard, long, short, fast, daily, straight.
- Not all -ly words are adverbs. elderly, friendly, lively, cowardly, and lonely are adjectives.
3. Special Word Pairs and Common Confusions
- Hard means with effort or vigorously.
- Hardly means very little, almost not.
- Hardly ever means almost never.
4. So, Such, Enough, Too, Quite, Fairly, Rather
- So and such make the meaning of an adjective or adverb stronger.
- So is used with adjective or adverb.
- Such is used with a noun.
