Topics in Population Dynamics

1

1. Distribution of Population in the World

  • In 2024, about 59.05% of the global population lives in Asia.
  • World population was 7.35 billion in 2015 and increased to 8 billion by 2023.
  • World population is projected to reach 9.8 billion in 2050 and may exceed approximately 11.2 billion by 2100.
2

2. Factors Affecting the Size of Population

  • The size of population is affected by fertility rate, birth rate, death rate, immigration, and emigration.
  • Natural growth rate of a country is the difference between the birth rate and the death rate.
  • If births equal deaths each year, population stabilises.
3

3. Density of Population and Population Distribution

  • Population density is the total population divided by total land area.
  • Population density is usually expressed as number of people per square kilometre.
  • High density population areas often have favourable climate, good resources, flat land, and better job opportunities.
4

4. Overpopulation

  • The term overpopulation means too great a population for a given region to support.
  • Overpopulation is a condition where population is so dense that it causes environmental deterioration and reduced quality of life.
  • Overpopulation is not the same as having the highest total population.
