  • India is the world’s seventh largest country.

2. Major Physical Divisions of India

  • India has six major physical divisions: the Himalayas, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Thar Desert, the Coastal Regions, and the Islands.
  • These divisions explain why India has mountains, fertile plains, dry deserts, long coasts, and island groups.
  • The Indian subcontinent is separated from mainland Asia by the Himalayas.

  • The Himalayas are young fold mountains and form a mountain wall in the north, northwest and northeast of India.

  • The Northern Plains lie between the Himalayas in the north and the Peninsular Plateau in the south.

  • They are aggradational plains formed by depositional work of rivers.
