  • A rational number has the form p/q.
  • p and q must be integers.
  • q cannot be zero.
  • Same signs give a positive rational number.
  • Opposite signs give a negative rational number.
  • Multiplying numerator and denominator by the same non-zero integer gives an equivalent rational number.
  • Standard form needs two conditions.
  • The numerator and denominator must be coprime.
  • The denominator must be positive.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Zero is not a rational number because it is not written as a proper fraction.

Any fraction is already in standard form if it has a negative sign anywhere.

A rational number is positive only when both numerator and denominator are positive.
