Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Sequence and A.P. Basics

  • A set of numbers arranged in a definite order is called a sequence.
  • In a sequence, terms are written as t1, t2, t3, ... , tn.
  • An A.P. is a sequence in which the difference between two consecutive terms is constant.
2

2. nth Term of an A.P.

  • If the first term is a and the common difference is d, the terms are a, a+d, a+2d, a+3d, ... .
  • The nth term formula is t_n = a + (n - 1)d.
  • This formula helps find any term directly without writing all the previous terms.
3

3. Sum of First n Terms of an A.P.

  • The sum of the first n terms of an A.P. is written as S_n.
  • For the A.P. a, a+d, a+2d, ... , a+(n-1)d, the sum can be found in three useful forms.
  • Gauss’s pairing idea shows that terms can be added efficiently by pairing the first and last terms, second and second-last terms, and so on.
4

4. Special Word Problems and Patterns

  • Kabir’s heights at ages 1, 2, and 3 years were 70 cm, 80 cm, and 90 cm.
  • These heights form an A.P. because the difference is 10 cm each time.
  • The king’s story compares two salary patterns: Tara’s salary is 100,200,300,400,... which is an A.P., while Meera’s salary is 10,20,40,80,... which is a G.P.
