Key Topics to Revise

1

1. Random Experiment and Outcome

  • A random experiment is an experiment in which all possible results are known in advance but none can be predicted with certainty, and there is equal possibility for each result.
  • The result of a random experiment is called an outcome.
  • Tossing a coin, throwing a die, picking a card from numbers 1 to 50, and drawing a card from a well shuffled pack of playing cards are random experiments.
2

2. Sample Space and Sample Point

  • The set of all possible outcomes of a random experiment is called the sample space.
  • Sample space is denoted by S or Ω.
  • Each element of the sample space is called a sample point.
3

3. Event and Favourable Outcomes

  • Outcomes satisfying a particular condition are called favourable outcomes.
  • A set of favourable outcomes of a given sample space is an event.
  • An event is a subset of the sample space.
4

4. Probability of an Event

  • Probability is the numerical measure of the possibility of an event.
  • For equally likely outcomes, probability is found by dividing favourable outcomes by total outcomes.
  • For a random experiment with sample space S and event A, probability of A is P(A) = n(A)/n(S).
