1. Distance on a Number Line and in the XY-Plane

  • Distance between P and Q on a number line is 4 when P = -1 and Q = -5.
  • Distance between Q and R on a number line is 9 when Q = -5 and R = 4.
  • For any two points in the plane, use the distance formula.

2. Section Formula and Midpoint Formula

  • A point dividing a segment in the ratio m:n is found using the section formula.
  • By the property of intercepts, AP/PB = CQ/QD = m/n in the construction used for the section formula.
  • If AP = 6 and PB = 10, then AP/PB = 3/5.

3. Centroid of a Triangle

  • D is the midpoint of BC in the centroid derivation.
  • The median AD divides the triangle in such a way that AG:GD = 2:1.
  • The centroid lies on the median.

4. Slope of a Line

  • For any two points on a line, the ratio (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1) is constant.
  • Slope is generally denoted by m.
  • On line l through A(-2,-5), B(0,-2), C(2,1), D(4,4), and E(6,7), this ratio stays the same for any pair of points.
