What to Focus On
- Similar triangles have equal corresponding angles.
- Similar triangles have corresponding sides in the same proportion.
- Construction is done in two cases: distinct vertices and one common vertex.
- A line perpendicular to the radius at its outer end is a tangent to the circle.
- If CP is a radius and P is on the circle, then the perpendicular through P is the tangent.
- The construction uses the centre of the circle.
- This construction does not use the centre of the circle.
- The tangent-secant angle theorem gives angle CAB congruent to angle BCD.
- The converse of the tangent-secant theorem proves that line CD is the tangent.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
A tangent at a point on a circle can be drawn by guessing any line that touches the circle.
Without using the centre, the tangent can still be constructed by drawing a radius from the point of tangency.
The same letter always means the same point everywhere in the chapter.
Memory Tips
Construction of a triangle similar to a given triangle uses two cases: vertices distinct and one vertex common
Corresponding sides of similar triangles are proportional and corresponding angles are equal
Construction of tangent at a point on a circle using the centre
Perpendicular to the radius at the point of contact gives the tangent
