- Varahmihir wrote four chapters on water in Brihatsamhita about one and a half thousand years ago.
- He studied soil texture, botanical studies, ant hills, and the relation of groundwater with the behaviour of animals.
- Animals linked with groundwater signs include frog, fish, snake, lizard, monitor lizard, mongoose, cobra, and turtle.

- A lake is smaller than a sarovar and larger than a well.
- A lake is also known as Pushkarani, Vapi, and Vapika.
- Pushkarani means lotus pond.

4. Water management in dynasties and forts
- The Rashtrakutas constructed Jagtung Sarovar near Kandhar in Nanded district.
- The Satavahanas constructed Hersul Lake near Aurangabad.
- Kushyagupta Vaishya constructed Sudarshan Sarovar at Girnar on the instructions of Emperor Chandragupta Maurya.
