1. Water cycle and the need for measurement
- All groundwater originates from the water cycle.
- Measurement is needed for vapour, rain, flowing water, stagnant water, and seeping water.
- Proper measurement helps in preserving water resources.

2. Rainfall measurement
- The device used to measure rainfall is called a rain gauge.
- A rain gauge is a cylindrical flat-bottom measuring cylinder with a funnel top.
- The funnel mouth diameter is 127 mm and the edge height is 110 mm.

3. Evaporation measurement
- Evaporation rate is measured by an evaporator.
- The evaporator is a shallow rounded iron vessel with a diameter of 1.2 m and depth 30 cm.
- It is painted white on both sides.

4. Surface flow measurement
- Flowing water can be measured by orifices, meter gates, wears, flumes, and V-notch.
- The V-notch method uses a wooden or iron plank with a V-shaped triangular notch in the center.
- The angle of the notch is 90 degrees.
