- Natural environment includes water, air, soil, forest, animals, biological elements, climate, and atmosphere.
- Natural variation is seen in Maharashtra through Sahyadri, Deccan Plateau, Coastal Konkan region, and Vidarbha-Khandesh.
- Man-made environment includes settlements, roads, airways, waterways, railways, industries, and other human-made elements.

- Ecosystem is the relationship between abiotic and biotic elements and their interaction.
- Even a small watershed or lake can be an ecosystem.
- Land ecosystem includes grasslands, forests, and deserts.

4. Forest Ecosystem and Forest Types in Maharashtra
- Forests regulate the water cycle and protect the land surface.
- Forests meet human needs such as wood, medicinal plants, and honey.
- Currently the forest ecosystem covers about 9.4% of the total surface area of the earth, i.e. about 30% of the total land.
