Criteria for Animal Classification
- Grades of Organization: Animals show different levels of complexity - cellular (Porifera), cell-tissue (Cnidaria), tissue-organ (Platyhelminthes), and organ-system (Annelida onwards)
- Body Symmetry: Three types - Asymmetry (no definite symmetry like sponges), Radial symmetry (body parts arranged around central axis like Cnidaria), and Bilateral symmetry (body can be divided into tw
- Body Cavity (Coelom): Acoelomate (no body cavity - Platyhelminthes), Pseudocoelomate (false body cavity - Aschelminthes), Coelomate (true body cavity - Annelida onwards)
Animal Body Plans
- Cell Aggregate Plan: Minimal differentiation, no true tissues or organs. Cells work as a colony. Found in Porifera (sponges)
- Blind Sac Body Plan: Body like a sac with single opening serving as both mouth and anus. Digestion occurs in central cavity. Found in Cnidaria
- Tube within Tube Body Plan: Complete digestive system with separate mouth and anus. Most efficient plan found in Annelida onwards
Non-Chordate Phyla (Phylum Porifera to Hemichordata)
- Porifera (Sponges): Cellular level organization, asymmetrical, aquatic filter feeders. Canal system with ostia, spongocoel, and osculum. Choanocytes create water current
- Cnidaria: Tissue level, radially symmetrical, diploblastic. Two body forms - polyp and medusa. Cnidoblasts for defense. Show metagenesis in some species
- Ctenophora: Diploblastic, radially symmetrical, marine. Eight rows of comb plates for locomotion. Bioluminescent. Colloblasts instead of cnidoblasts
Phylum Chordata and Vertebrate Classes
- Chordate Characteristics: Notochord, dorsal hollow nerve cord, pharyngeal gill slits, post-anal tail (at least in embryonic stage)
- Urochordata (Tunicates): Marine, sessile adults. Notochord only in larval tail. Body covered by tunic made of tunicine
- Cephalochordata (Amphioxus): Small fish-like marine animals. Notochord extends throughout life. Shows basic chordate features clearly
