Key Topics to Revise
1
Types of Movements and Locomotion
- Movement can be internal (peristalsis, blood circulation) or external (limb movement, locomotion)
- Movement can be voluntary (controlled by striated muscles) or involuntary (controlled by smooth and cardiac muscles)
- Four basic types of locomotory movements: Amoeboid (pseudopodia), Ciliary (cilia), Whorling (flagella), and Muscular (muscles with bones)
2
Structure and Working of Skeletal Muscles
- Three types of skeletal muscles based on function: Agonists (prime movers like biceps), Synergists (assist prime movers like brachialis), Antagonists (opposite action like triceps)
- Muscle attachment points: Origin (attached to stationary bone), Insertion (attached to movable bone), Belly (middle thick part)
- Muscles work in antagonistic pairs - one contracts while the other relaxes
3
Molecular Basis of Muscle Contraction
- Contractile unit of muscle is sarcomere containing actin (thin) and myosin (thick) filaments
- Myosin filament: Made of heavy meromyosin (HMM) and light meromyosin (LMM), has cross bridges with myosin heads containing ATPase activity
- Actin filament: Contains F-actin (backbone), tropomyosin (covers binding sites), and troponin (calcium-binding protein)
4
Mechanism of Muscle Contraction and Relaxation
- Contraction process: Nerve impulse → Action potential in T-tubules → Calcium release → Troponin-tropomyosin complex change → Active sites exposed → Myosin-actin binding → Power stroke → Contraction
- Relaxation process: Stimulus stops → Calcium ions return → Troponin-tropomyosin complex restored → Active sites covered → Filaments return to original position
- Both contraction and relaxation are active processes requiring ATP
