Plant Growth - Definition and Characteristics
- Growth is permanent, irreversible increase in bulk accompanied by change of form
- Two aspects: Quantitative (increase in size, volume, mass) and Qualitative (development and differentiation)
- In vascular plants, growth is indeterminate (continues throughout life) and restricted to meristems

Phases of Growth
- Three distinct phases corresponding to cell division, enlargement, and maturation
- Phase of Cell Division: Meristematic cells divide mitotically; slow growth rate (Lag phase)
- Phase of Cell Enlargement: Cells become vacuolated, turgid; rapid growth (Exponential/Log phase)

Growth Rate and Types of Growth
- Growth rate = increased growth per unit time (efficiency index)
- Absolute Growth Rate (AGR) = dn/dt (change in cell number over time)
- Relative Growth Rate (RGR) = AGR/n (growth rate relative to existing size)

Growth Curves and Development Processes
- Growth curves: Linear (arithmetic), Exponential (geometric), Sigmoid (S-shaped)
- Sigmoid curve has three phases: Lag, Log, and Stationary phases
- Grand Period of Growth = total time for all growth phases
