1. Importance of Agriculture

  • Agriculture is a primary activity because it directly uses land to produce food and raw materials.
  • Two-thirds of India’s population is engaged in agricultural activities.
  • Agriculture provides livelihood for more than 60 per cent of India’s population.

2. Types of Farming

  • Primitive subsistence farming is practised on small patches of land with primitive tools and family or community labour.
  • Primitive subsistence farming depends on monsoon, natural soil fertility and local environmental conditions.
  • It is slash-and-burn agriculture: farmers clear a patch, cultivate it, and shift when soil fertility declines.

3. Cropping Seasons

  • India has three cropping seasons: rabi, kharif and zaid.
  • Rabi crops are sown in winter from October to December and harvested in summer from April to June.
  • Important rabi crops are wheat, barley, peas, gram and mustard.

4. Major Food Crops

  • Rice is the staple food crop of a majority of people in India.
  • India is the second largest producer of rice in the world after China.
  • Rice is a kharif crop and needs high temperature, high humidity and annual rainfall above 100 cm.
