1. Importance of Agriculture
- Agriculture is a primary activity because it directly uses land to produce food and raw materials.
- Two-thirds of India’s population is engaged in agricultural activities.
- Agriculture provides livelihood for more than 60 per cent of India’s population.
2. Types of Farming
- Primitive subsistence farming is practised on small patches of land with primitive tools and family or community labour.
- Primitive subsistence farming depends on monsoon, natural soil fertility and local environmental conditions.
- It is slash-and-burn agriculture: farmers clear a patch, cultivate it, and shift when soil fertility declines.
3. Cropping Seasons
- India has three cropping seasons: rabi, kharif and zaid.
- Rabi crops are sown in winter from October to December and harvested in summer from April to June.
- Important rabi crops are wheat, barley, peas, gram and mustard.
4. Major Food Crops
- Rice is the staple food crop of a majority of people in India.
- India is the second largest producer of rice in the world after China.
- Rice is a kharif crop and needs high temperature, high humidity and annual rainfall above 100 cm.
