  • Its location was helped by raw cotton availability, market, transport, port facilities, labour and moist climate.

  • India is the largest producer of raw jute and jute goods and stands at second place as an exporter after Bangladesh.
  • The first jute mill was set up near Kolkata in 1855 at Rishra.
  • Most jute mills are located along the banks of the Hugli river in West Bengal.
