1. Consumer in the Marketplace

  • In a market, consumers are often weaker than sellers because they buy in small amounts and are scattered.

  • The consumer movement in India began in organised form in the 1960s because of food shortages, hoarding, black marketing, and adulteration.

  • The UN adopted Guidelines for Consumer Protection in 1985, which became the international foundation of the movement.

  • Right to safety protects consumers against goods and services hazardous to life and property.
  • Right to information means details like ingredients, price, batch number, date of manufacture, expiry date, and manufacturer address must be given.
  • Right to choice means a consumer can choose whether to continue receiving a service or buy a product.

  • Reji Mathew suffered because of improper anaesthesia during a tonsillectomy in a private clinic in Kerala.
  • His father first filed a complaint for Rs 5,00,000 in the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, but it was dismissed for insufficient evidence.
  • The National Commission in New Delhi held the hospital responsible for medical negligence and directed payment of compensation.
