1What are rights and why are they important? What are the bases on which claims to rights can be made?Show solution
Rights are essentially entitlements or justified claims. They are claims that people regard as necessary for living with respect and dignity, and which society and the state should recognise and uphold. Rights are important because they protect a person’s self-respect, support well-being, help people develop their talents, and make democratic government possible by allowing freedom and participation.

The main bases on which claims to rights can be made are:

1. Need for dignity and self-respect — rights such as the right to livelihood or freedom of expression are necessary for leading a dignified life.
2. Need for well-being — rights like education help us develop our abilities, reason, and make informed choices.
3. Universal human value — some rights are claimed because all human beings are equally valuable and deserve certain minimum conditions simply because they are human.
4. Legal and constitutional recognition — rights may also be supported and protected by law and the Constitution, such as Fundamental Rights in India.

So, rights are important because they make a good, dignified, and democratic life possible and place duties on the state and on other people to respect them.

2On what grounds are some rights considered to be universal in nature? Identify three rights which you consider universal. Give reasons.Show solution
Some rights are considered universal because they are necessary for the dignity and well-being of all human beings. The chapter says that rights like the right to livelihood, freedom of expression, and education are universal because they help every person live with dignity, develop abilities, and make free choices. They are not limited to one country, class, religion, or group.

Three universal rights with reasons:

1. Right to life — every human being needs life and protection from harm to live at all.
2. Right to liberty — people need freedom to act, think, and make choices for a dignified life.
3. Right to education — education develops reasoning, skills, and informed choice, which are needed by all persons.

These rights are universal because they are essential for human dignity, self-respect, and well-being for everyone.

3Discuss briefly some of the new rights claims which are being put forward in our country today — for example the rights of tribal peoples to protect their habitat and way of life, or the rights of children against bonded labour.Show solution
Several new rights claims are being put forward today because societies face new problems and people want a life of dignity and security. The chapter mentions demands for rights such as clean air, clean water, sustainable development, and rights of children.

In India, some important new claims include:

- Rights of tribal peoples to protect their habitat and way of life so that their land, forests, and culture are not destroyed.
- Rights of children against bonded labour so that children are not forced into work and can study and grow safely.
- Right to clean environment such as clean air and water.
- Right to livelihood for people affected by war, poverty, or natural crisis.
- Right to information to know what the government is doing, such as the status of an application.

These new claims arise from the belief that every person should be able to live with dignity, security, and basic well-being.
