1. Basic Idea, Order, and Elements of a Matrix

  • A matrix is an ordered rectangular array of numbers or functions.
  • Matrices in this chapter contain only real numbers or real-valued functions.
  • A matrix of order m × n has m rows and n columns.

  • A column matrix has only one column.
  • A row matrix has only one row.
  • A square matrix has equal numbers of rows and columns.

3. Equality, Addition, Scalar Multiplication, and Difference

  • Two matrices are equal only if they have the same order and all corresponding entries are equal.
  • Matrix addition is defined only for matrices of the same order.
  • Addition is done element by element.

4. Multiplication of Matrices

  • The product AB is defined only when the number of columns of A equals the number of rows of B.
  • If A is of order m × n and B is of order n × p, then AB is of order m × p.
  • The entry c ik is found by taking the ith row of A and kth column of B and multiplying corresponding entries.
